Ziwa Rhino sanctuary home to 20 southern white rhinos offers an opportunity for Rhino trekking on foot. The size of the sanctuary is about 70 sq km of natural habitat for ptotection of these endangered rhinos in Uganda. The country re-introduced 6 white Rhinos in 2005 which have multiplied due to strong protection and conservation. With support by Rhino Fund Uganda working in partnership with Uganda Wildlife Authority, the rhinos will be released into Murchison Falls national park. On the negative side, Uganda lost more than 600 Eastern black and white rhinos due to poaching and civil conflicts which pushed them to extinction by 1982. The rhino projects work hand in hand with safari lodges at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary. Everytime tourist’s visit, a percentage of the money goes to conservation of the Rhinos.
Located in Nakasongoro distirct along the road to Murchison Falls National park, the rhino sanctuary is accessible by tourists on Uganda safari within 4-5 hours drive from Kampala city.
A 4 days trip to Murchison Falls National park can include a stopover or a night at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary where you take on the searching for endagered white rhinos. With experts from Rhino Fund Uganda, tourists can join rangers on foot to get up close 20 or 45 meters distance to rhinos when they have been located. Besides tracking the rhinos, you can learn about fauna and flora. Through activities like day and night walks, shoebill stork trek and canoe ride, bird watching, you can spot animals such as Advark, serval cat, pats monkeys, bush duiker, waterbuck, bushbuck and over 200 species of birds.
For more chances of viewing larger mammals, Murchison falls national park offers game drive safaris and boat cruise on the Nile. With a ranger, you expect to see elephants, buffalo, zebra, rothchild’s giraffe, lion, leopard and aquatic mammals like hippos, Nile crocodiles, a variety of bird species while staying at a nice luxury or budget lodge overlooking the River Nile.
