Short Rwanda gorilla trek start from Kigali early morning, returning to Kigali in the evening. It will require an early set off to drive a two hours journey to Volcanoes National Park to attend a pre-gorilla tracking briefing. Volcanoes national park in the Virunga Conservation Area is home to over 200 mountain gorillas with 10 habituated gorilla families. The park consists of 8 Virunga volcanoes on which these gorilla families fore range. These Volcanoes include mt Bisoke, Karisimbi, Sabyinyo, Muhavura, Mount Gahinga among others. Volcanoes are also home to other primates like golden monkeys, colobus, monkeys, mammal species like forest elephants, duikers, bush pigs as well 178 bird species including 13 endemics of Virunga and mt Rwenzori.
Tour itinerary
You will be picked from the hotel early morning at 4:30 am and drive to Volcanoes National Park for about 2 and a half hours reaching early by 7:00 am for briefing at kinigi park headquarters. You will then be assembled in groups of 8 people and allocated a gorilla family to track. Gorilla trekking involves a strenuous hike, you may therefore be advised to hire a porter in case you may need one before you leave the park quarters. You will then embark on the gorilla tracking adventure in the forest led by the park rangers and guide following the previous trails of the gorillas where they were last seen. This activity may take longer than expected or 2-6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas. You will be advised to have your packed lunch and enough drinking water. when you finally find the gorillas, you will spend one hour with the gorillas, take photographs and get all the necessary information. In return, you will meet your driver-guide at the starting point and drive back to Kigali reaching in the evening.
